ONE EVENT. MANY PERSPECTIVES.

Opera launches the WebAI standard, enabling AI models to run natively in the browser.

Opera has launched a new web standard, WebAI, designed to enable users to run AI models directly in the browser without relying on the cloud. The standard is compatible with multiple models; Google’s open-source Gemma serves as a demonstration, and it also supports Apple’s on-device foundation models. By avoiding dependence on any specific model and targeting open-weight AI systems, WebAI represents a continuation of Opera’s earlier efforts to run large language models locally in the browser. Currently, WebAI is available in preview within Opera One, the flagship browser, and requires users to manually enable it.
